Face to Face Appointments at Our Abortion Clinics South London
Before we offer you abortion treatment, you will have a consultation with a clinician. Your consultation can be over the phone, or face-to-face in a clinic. If you have arranged a callback, and you’ve been asked to visit us at one of our NUPAS clinics in South London, then here’s what to expect at your consultation.
The clinician (a nurse or midwife) will explain your treatment options and answer any questions you have about the abortion. The clinician will ask you about your medical history. You must answer their questions honestly and give as much information as you can. They will want to know about any medical conditions you have or medications that you take. This is to make sure treatment will be safe and suitable for you.
You may have been asked to have an ultrasound scan prior to this appointment, this will be to date the gestation of your pregnancy and ensure that your treatment options suit your needs.
If you are having a surgical abortion, we will check that your pulse rate and blood pressure are at safe levels before the procedure. We will also discuss the screening tests we offer for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and your future contraception options.

Taking Abortion Pills at Home: How Does it Work?
A medical abortion uses two medications:
- Mifepristone: Taken first, this pill blocks progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy continuation. This stops the pregnancy from developing. It's swallowed with water.
- Misoprostol: Taken after mifepristone, this medication causes the uterus to contract, expelling the pregnancy tissue. It works like natural hormones that trigger menstruation and childbirth, leading to cramping and bleeding similar to a miscarriage. You'll take up to six misoprostol pills. Four can be inserted vaginally or dissolved between your cheek and gum for 30 minutes before swallowing. If bleeding doesn't start or is light, take the remaining two pills the same way. When taken together, mifepristone and misoprostol induce an abortion.
